Questions for Cuba

as soon as I arrive I start the questions
you
watch me patiently, moist eyes, January rain
I request clarity, dates, reasons
you deliver songs, guavas, sugared coffee
the light of a hurricane illuminates
my offerings
     memories, desires, hope
in exchange for your fateful strength

we get acquainted, barely touching
in Havana
     vertigo of mansions, broken streets
     mildewed angels
cosmic saints of a victorious race
we share words, signs of life

I fall in love
faint at your side
you lift me from where I have fallen
carry me to a green field
here I forget questions, rest my mind
heal my hopes in the blue air
Caribbean certitude whispers
     "hasta siempre," farewell
     until always
