Traveler

if I am born again
I want to be a Oaxacan girl
wear a dress embroidered at the sleeves
whip chocolate that smells of flowers
walk singing along cobblestone streets

if I get a new life
I will be born in Venezuela
on the plain
I will drink rum with hand-made cheese
bathe in the rain
in a bromeliad jungle

if the day I am reborn
will be in Montevideo
I will inhabit a high apartment with windows
eyes for the Plate River
my chest will breathe in
gray skies of eucalyptus and parrilladas

if I am granted another chance
look for me in Castro
in the south of Chile
I will offer you a silver adornment
a woolen weaving
the steam of small tea will warm you

if things like this happen
you will think I'm from out of town
someone with a familiar face
you'll call me
the Pilgrim
